MAKING HISTORY WITH LED LIGHT MOUNTS FOR EARLY BRONCOS
The iconic Ford Bronco has been considered a classic for many years and continues to be just as popular today with its cult-like status among four-wheel drive and car collector enthusiasts alike. What makes this car so special to its fans? Let’s take a look at its early history to find out.

The Bronco was initially created in 1965 to serve as competition to Jeep’s CJ5 and International Harvester’s Scout. It was an innovative move, creating a completely new product line for Ford Motor Company and was built on its own unique platform. This included its own frame, suspension, and body designs that were not used with any other vehicle they made. The early designs of the Bronco were focused on keeping it simple and affordable in order to compete in with the Jeep and IH model prices on the market. The first generation of Ford Broncos that were produced from 1966-1977 had a small form factor and short wheelbase of 92 inches making it the perfect companion for epic off-road adventures. The axles and brakes were taken from the Ford F100 4×4 trucks. However, the difference was that the front axle was mounted using radius arms that went from the frame near the transmission forward to the axle housing and a lateral tracking bar to center the housing under the frame. This permitted the use of coil springs giving the Bronco a 34 foot turning radius, longer wheel travel and an anti-dive geometry.

The 66-77 Ford Bronco’s inimitable style and ground breaking off-road performance led it to become a cult classic with a very dedicated following. This was solidified when racecar builder Bill Stroppe used it in long-distance off-road competitions, ultimately making it an American icon. During the late 60’s and early 70’s, Stroppe’s off-road team who all used the classic Broncos ruled at offroad events such as the Mint 400, Baja 500 and Baja 1000 races. In 1971, Ford used this popularity and offered Bill Stroppe’s “Baja Bronco” design, which offered automatic transmission, quick-ratio power steering, fender flares, a roll bar, Gates Commando tires, reinforced bumpers, a padded steering wheel, and custom red, white, blue & black paint. All of these features, however, came with a price tag of $5,566 vs. the standard V8 Bronco price of $3,665. This caused only 650 Baja Broncos to be sold over the next four years. Interestingly, the limited sales made the Baja Bronco a rare gem to find, and is a very popular collector model to this day.

Broncos have successfully kept up with other competitors over the years by making innovative improvements within their system. Initially, all early Broncos used a 4 wheel drive and came with a Dana Corporation Model 20 transfer case and manual locking hubs. From 1966-1971, the Bronco donned a Dana 30 differential. However, in late 1971, Ford changed this over to offer the much stronger Dana 44 model front end standard. The initial models of early Bronco came with either a 170 ci Six-cylinder engine or a 289 ci V8 engine. Always a competitor, Ford Motor Company changed from the 289 engine over to a 302 V8 to compete with Chevrolet’s new Blazer model which featured a 350 ci V8 engine in 1969. In 1973, Ford also raised the displacement of the Bronco’s 6-cylinder option from 170 ci to 200 ci. Additionally in 1973, Ford added options for factory power steering and automatic transmissions which greatly increased sales. In 1976 & 1977, the last two years of the early Bronco, Ford began to offer front disc brakes as standard equipment on the Bronco and offered vacuum assisted power brakes as an option.
